White Elephant: The Blacks

A bell is ringing, a chant can be heard, we get tiptoed into the devotional area. Gypsy actors who are dressed in mystical, poetical white dresses by Judit Gombár are facing with the “white” ones, who are playing backs in black. They are singing: monologues, dialogues, with fantastic gestures. suggestive mimics up until the infinity...

Since Theomachia we have been waiting for that the brave, incredibly inventive Zoltán Balázs can fulfil completely his genius ideas, and he has not been prevented by the inappropriate group. Only his own group, the Maladype can make it possible!

They only sometimes declaim Jean Genet’ dramatic text, the actors are doing play-back, with the usage of their singer partners recitativo, parts of their arias, and they imitate it with all their heart and soul. László Sáry, except some effects by percussion instruments, creates almost an a capella opera, to show congenially the dramatic fights and the smallest moments of the text too. The amazing singers solve a heroic task: with their continuous presence during the more than two hours long performance, with excellent singing, and with synchronicity which needs enormous concentration. We must write down their names with great ovation: Beatrix Fodor, /soprano/, Apollónia Szolnoki /alto/, László Böröcz /tenor/, Szabolcs Hámori /bass/ and Zoltán Gavodi /countertenor/.

Zoltán Balázs builds the gigantic vison of the “black mass” with unique sense of proportion, we are surprised by unexpected movements in every moment, he finds expressive visual gesture to almost all phrases, he creates a performance which is full in itself and can explain itself. Vision and word, sound and light, ostinato movements and explosive outbreaks form a gothic structure: it is unique, frightening, impressive!!! The group work together in a heroic way to fulfil the director’s ideas, everybody is an independent character one by one but they can form evidently the uniform style of the performance. We must emphasize the virtuoso, explosive character by Balázs Dévai, we could not imagine that he would be able to do something like this!

The echoing area of the Bárka Theatre is useful for the performance, its size makes it possible for the generous building of the auditorium. The Maladype and Zoltán Balázs’ wonderful performance can get civil rights to the Bárka Theatre between the real theatres...
